Washington’s Crossing: 3 hours, van
Morale among General George Washington’s Continental soldiers was low as 1776 came to a close, after suffering many defeats throughout the year. Yet they crossed the river. The water was icy; the ground was slippery; several men fell out of the boat. Once they landed in New Jersey, many men left bloody footprints in the snow, as they were bootless and using rags as shoes, in a feeble attempt to protect their feet. The future was uncertain, but Washington and his men marched to Trenton and surprised the Hessians, yielding a victory that galvanized Americans to the cause.
The tour begins at the Trenton Visitors’ Center, and travels along both sides the beautiful Delaware River to cover the events of Washington’s daring night crossing and surprise attack on Trenton, along with stop at the grounds where he devised the plan to retake New Jersey. Stops include the Assunpink Creek, the Trenton Battle monument, and Mill Hill Park.

Princeton Battlefield: 3 hours, van
After the Continental Army salvaged a bad year with their Christmas victory in Trenton, General Washington successfully appealed to his men to reenlist for six more weeks. Immediately afterward, the Americans and British clashed again along the Assunpink, and at nightfall, the Americans snuck past the British and marched to Princeton. In Princeton, they encountered a large group of British soldiers bound for Trenton; the Americans were able to repel the British, and forced them to surrender.
The success in Princeton would not have happened were it not for a small group of Washington’s men stoking the fires through the night along the Assunpink Creek, making the British believe they’d be fighting there the next morning. So, the tour begins here, at the Trenton Visitors’ Center. From there, we’ll retrace Washington’s dangerous night march past the sleeping British, to Princeton. Featured are critical sites leading to the victory in Princeton, including a detailed walking tour of the well-known State Park. Other stops include the stunning Princeton Battle monument, the Trenton Battle monument, and Mill Hill Park.
